With 750 students and Superintendent Craig Ross’ energetic introduction (complete with on-stage selfie), it quickly became clear that this Super Citizen Program kickoff event would be like no other! On Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, students at 11 Cullman Co. Schools paked into the Haynes Theatre to welcome Lady Liberty and the Next Great Americans Bus Tour. From Ross running back and forth during his intro to the triumphant appearance of Lady Liberty and the ultra-loud singing of :YOU in the USA,” the room was electric! The performance is the beginning of the Super Citizen Program students will participate in back in classrooms for the next 10 months thanks to community sponsors Wells Fargo & Mac Buttram. Those sponsors are helping educators infuse schools with an exciting infusion of civics, character, financial literacy, careers and social studies to combat the shrinking sliver of time dedicated to those crucial lessons in the classroom.
At the end of 10 weeks, each school will hold a Super Citizen graduation celebration – receiving certificates and presenting “Torch Team” heroes from their communities with awards on stage. “When you’re back here to see how students have learned from the program and the process of honoring their heroes, there will not be a dry eye in the room,” says Liberty Learning Foundation’s Tawanna Vickers. She also reiterated, “We talk about students being great citizens but we want them and the community to remember that it takes great corporate citizens like Wells Fargo & Mac Buttram to make sure we can keep these lessons and exciting events in schools and impact our next generation of great Americans.”
