On Wednesday Nov. 19, 2014 Attalla Elementary School students gathered to celebrate their graduation from the Super Citizen Program that they have been a part of for the past 10 months. In addition to receiving certificates, they invited parents, press and local VIPS to watch as the last lesson of the Super Citizen Program culminated on stage.
In a project-based learning project called “Torch Teams,” these fifth graders nominated, voted for and ulitimately honored local heroes from stage. As students read the reasons why they chose their heroes, it was clear that the lessons in civics and character they had learned had come full circle. They were honoring heroes and becoming heroes themselves.
The Super Citizen Program, the Kickoff event and today’s Graduation Celebration were made possible by Mayor Larry Means and the Attalla City Council who recognize the need for exciting civics, character, financial literacy and social studies teaching in the shrinking sliver of time left for those crucial subjects in the classroom. The students were so engaged in the program that, according to social studies teacher Matt Davis, their post-program testing showed proficiency in all areas!
Honored today were:
- DARE Officer, Kevin Carter
- DHR worker, Monica Frazier
- Shane Barksdale
- Police officer, Chris Sholar (his three children accepted on his behalf)
- and more
A special thanks to motivational speaker & Elvis impersonator Danny Frasier for being a part of the festivities!
