The fifth graders of Boaz Intermediate gathered today, September 21, to begin the 10-week Super Citizen Program. A special guest, all the way from New York Harbor appeared on stage to introduce them to this 10-week civics, character, financial literacy and social studies infusion.

But this wasn’t just any guest! When the statuesque (pun intended) Libby Liberty™ took to the stage while students cheered and clapped.

Libby brought history to life on stage and then explained that we all already hold the most important title in the United States: the title of citizen.

The Super Citizen Program, brought to the schools at no cost by the Liberty Learning Foundation, helps educators teach these crucial lessons within their already busy school days. And with its focus on video, music and group projects, teachers tell us it’s helping them “really connect and engage” their students.

How do we judge the impact of the program? East scores rise, behavior issues go down and in the closing unit of the Super Citizen Program, students take what they’ve been learning and apply it to their own communities. They choose and honor a local hero because, as the foundation says, “When you honor a hero, you become a hero.”

and as part of of their graduation the students will honor a local hero of their choosing, someone in their community who they believe to be a super citizen.

With the support of parents, teachers and community leaders these students our well on their way to becoming Our Next Great Americans.
