After Caleb Graham read his opening remarks on stage, fifth graders Rebecca Anderson, Amanda Ray, Jacob Keller, Makayla Matkins, Jase Bradley, Jackson Tucker, Megan Stewart, Anna Carder and Sarah Sanchez lead the pledge of alligiance.

The room was electric with anticipation. Students would soon receive graduation certificates from the Super Citizen Program – a 10-week civic, character & social studies experience that began with a bus tour and live performance last Fall. This three-step, immersive infusion was made possible by sponsors Madison County Commission and Liberty Learning Foundation (LLF), which orchestrates these events.

But being honored for their achievements was not what the excitement was all about. See, in the final piece of the program, students formed “Torch Teams.” They nominated local heroes from the community that they will be honoring today on stage – in front of 150 of their peers. And they were clearly ready to shine a light on them!

“It’s a powerful piece of our program that brings classroom lessons out into the real world,” says LLF founder Patti Yancey. “These kids identify great character and deeds, then they learn to model that behavior. They learn heroes don’t have to wear a cape or be famous.”
