On this foggy, but lovely Tuesday morning our Liberty Learning Foundation team arrived at Mull Elementary in Morganton, NC! The drive to Morganton from Indiana was absolutely beautiful! The mountains in autumn are just breathtaking!
We held our presentation in the library of the school this morning. Fourth grade teacher, Ms. Leslie Mull, began our program for us (yes, she really does have the same last name as the school- that was not a typo!). We got to talk with her a bit after the show. She said that the thing that attracted her most to the Super Citizen Program was the opportunity to combine character education with lessons about the United States and what it means to be a citizen. She was excited to teach lessons about the meaning words like freedom and citizenship.
One part of the Super Citizen Program is giving students the opportunity to put into writing what freedom means to them. Have you ever thought about that yourself? What does it mean to you to have freedom in your life? What does it mean to live in a free country? I believe that these are great questions to get students thinking…thinking about things that many people who have grown up in America take for granted. This is just the first step to understanding what it means to be an outstanding citizen- a Super Citizen! The students of today will not always be students. They will be adults someday. I hope that we will teach them to think like adults- to use reason and virtue, and to be worthy of the title “Great American.” If we can help students start thinking for themselves, I believe that we will have done those students, and our entire country, a great service.
Each day that we visit a school I look out into an audience of dozens, and sometimes hundreds of young faces. I hear them sing about freedom and liberty, and I hope that they will truly understand what they are singing about. But, how will they know unless they are told? In the short video that we show during our program, one of the statements that is made to the students about being a Super Citizen is that “it starts with you!” That is not only true for these young people, but it is true for all of us that have been around a little longer as well. It is up to us to teach. That is why our mission at the Liberty Learning Foundation is “to teach, inspire, and empower the Next Great Americans.”
I believe in our mission, and I believe that the Super Citizen Program is a great program. I wouldn’t be doing what I am doing if I didn’t believe that. I encourage you to research the program.
