With the help of local and state sponsors, 6th grade students from Evergreen City School, Lyeffion Junior High School, Repton Junior High School, and Thurgood Marshall Middle are beginning the American Character Program this year. Students will learn civics, history, character, careers and financial literacy in a format that uses excitement as its engagement platform. The lessons are in comic book format and expand into class exercises and activities that have serious impact. After studying the character and impact of historical American figures, they are then challenged to put their own character in action.
At the kickoff event, students were introduced to the program and the service learning component that will empower them to make a difference in their community and beyond. These “#GoodCharacters” projects will see students, along with local mentors, working to solve real issues. And, in the program’s conclusion, they’ll hold a #GoodCharacters Expo where they show off their bright ideas and the big deeds they accomplished.
The middle school program is a continuation of the our Hands on Liberty and Super Citizen Programs which has inspired and taught similar concepts to many of these students in elementary school.
We’re pretty sure these students “had a ball” at the kickoff!
Take a look at the gallery below!
- A new journey begins! Students are ready to explore the American Character Program and discover how the choices they make can shape who they become.
- Every story starts somewhere.
- A little comic book. A big journey.
- First stop: discovering what character looks like in action.
- Every great journey begins with a first step—and a first page.
- The pages are ready. The journey is just beginning.
- Starting with the Pledge of Allegiance gets us focused on the task at hand!
- It starts with two! Morgan and Jackson took on the challenge: Keep the ball moving! A simple challenge with a bigger lesson—every person has a role to play.
- Two became four! Morgan, Jackson, Tykerica, and Jadea joined forces to keep the ball moving. Teamwork takes everyone doing their part!
- Now everyone is going to give it a shot! These 6th graders promised to keep the ball in the air– can they do it?
- Mission– work as a team and don’t drop the ball.
- 3 beach balls= 3 times the work, 3 times the community support, and 3 times the fun!
- Everyone working together to not “drop the ball!”
- We can do more when we rely on help from others!
- They didn’t drop the ball as they learned the importance of working together to solve problems and make a difference!
- Thank you to the amazing teachers of Conecuh County Schools for investing in the next generation of #GoodCharacters!
