With the help of local and state sponsors, 6th grade students from Glencoe Middle School are beginning the American Character Program this year. Students will learn civics, history, character, careers and financial literacy in a format that uses excitement as its engagement platform. The lessons are in comic book format and expand into class exercises and activities that have serious impact. After studying the character and impact of historical American figures, they are then challenged to put their own character in action.
At the kickoff event, students were introduced to the program and the service learning component that will empower them to make a difference in their community and beyond. These “#GoodCharacters” projects will see students, along with local mentors, working to solve real issues. And, in the program’s conclusion, they’ll hold a #GoodCharacters Expo where they show off their bright ideas and the big deeds they accomplished.
The middle school program is a continuation of the our Hands on Liberty and Super Citizen Programs which has inspired and taught similar concepts to many of these students in elementary school.
We’re pretty sure these students “had a ball” at the kickoff!

- Starting with the Pledge of Allegiance gets us focused on the task at hand!
- It starts with two! Adalynn, Jonah, Jaelynn, and Carter took on the challenge: Keep the ball moving! A simple challenge with a bigger lesson—every person has a role to play.
- Now everyone is going to give it a shot! These 6th graders promised to keep the ball in the air– can they do it?
- Giving it their best shot!
- When we work together, we can keep things moving!
- We work as a team and we don’t “drop the ball”.
- We can do more when we rely on help from others!
- 3 beach balls= 3 times the work, 3 times the community support, and 3 times the fun!
- Everyone working together to not “drop the ball!”
- And suddenly, it’s not just a student challenge. Teachers, administrators, mentors, and guests jumped in to help keep the ball moving!
- Thank you to Superintendent Julie Talton; Tisha Howell, Secondary Curriculum & Instruction Coordinator; and all of the amazing teachers at Glencoe Middle School for investing in the next generation of #GoodCharacters!
- Everyone had a ball. They also learned an important lesson about teamwork.
