Cynthia Green and Barbie Sumner visited 5 Anniston City Schools (Tenth Street Elementary, Golden Springs Elementary, Randolph PArk Elementary, Constantine Elementary, and Cobb Elementary) on Friday, November 8th. The Liberty Team checked in with each teacher to see how the Super Citizen Program is going and also had a chance to speak to students on how their Torch Team nominations are going.

At Golden Springs, Mrs. Angela Davis’ class is mirroring an election process for their Torch Team Hero. Each student will write an essay on who they believe is a Super Citizen in their community. Mrs. Davis will select the best nominations and add their name to a ballot. Then the class will put a check mark next to the name of the nominee who they feel should be elected as their classes Torch Team Hero.

A Golden Springs Elementary fourth grader holds a piggy bank that her class is using for a coin drop. Each student is bringing in pennies, nickels, dimes, or quarters to raise funds to purchase a statue for their Torch Team Hero. They each are writing an essay about who they’d like to nominate as their Torch Team Hero. Students at Randolph Park Elementary School are also doing a coin drop for their classrooms. These fourth graders are pictured here showing how much money they’ve raised so far.

When we arrived at Constantine Elementary School, we were greeted by Alabama Power employee and Alabama Power Service Organization member Alyson Tucker. We visited Mrs. Cunningham’s class to hear how they’re program is going. Alyson Tucker also joined us in the classroom. We were so excited to see how engaged the children where. One of the best moments of the trip was when Alyson asked the class, if they remembered the book she read to them the previous week. Alyson volunteered inside Mrs. Cunningham’s class and read to them “Alexander, who used to be rich last Sunday”.  She then asked the students if they remembered what items Alexander wasted his money on in the story. Almost the entire class raised their hand and Alyson called on each one of them for their answer. The kids were so excited! Alyson then pulled a $1 dollar bill from her pocket and said “Because you all did so well listening to the story last week and answering my questions today… you have earned $1 dollar, which I will give to your Torch Team Statue fund.”

Our last stop for the day was at Cobb Elementary school, we had a chance to visit Mrs. Grimes class. As we entered the classroom, we instantly saw three jars sitting on the counter with three different people’s name listed on each jar. Inside, each was filled with coins. We asked the class if they could describe their three nominee’s and each student was eager to share why they chose their hero. We picked three students and each described their Hero. Mrs. Grimes’ thought these three leaders in their community each deserved a statue, so they’re classroom is working together to fund all three statues.
