With the help of local and state sponsors, 6th grade students from Arab Junior High School are beginning the American Character Program this year. Students will learn civics, history, character, careers and financial literacy in a format that uses excitement as its engagement platform. The lessons are in comic book format and expand into class exercises and activities that have serious impact. After studying the character and impact of historical American figures, they are then challenged to put their own character in action.
At the kickoff event, students were introduced to the program and the service learning component that will empower them to make a difference in their community and beyond. These “#GoodCharacters” projects will see students, along with local mentors, working to solve real issues. And, in the program’s conclusion, they’ll hold a #GoodCharacters Expo where they show off their bright ideas and the big deeds they accomplished.
The middle school program is a continuation of the our Hands on Liberty and Super Citizen Programs which has inspired and taught similar concepts to many of these students in elementary school.
We’re pretty sure these students “had a ball” at the kickoff!

- Their American Character story starts here.
- And so the journey begins.
- Mayor Bob Joslin, School Board Members Russ Williams & Patricia Henry, Assistant Superintendent John Ingram join some of our Liberty Learning Team as they get ready for Arab 6th graders to begin their American Character Journey!
- It starts with two! Colton and Tessa took on the challenge: Keep the ball moving! A simple challenge with a bigger lesson—every person has a role to play.
- Two became four! Colton, Alice, Tessa, and Jerret joined forces to keep the ball moving. Teamwork takes everyone doing their part!
- They will discover that character is built one choice at a time.
- Now everyone is going to give it a shot! These 6th graders promised to keep the ball in the air– can they do it?
- We can “keep the ball moving” by working together with our peers and mentors!
- When we work together, we can keep things moving!
- Everyone has a role to play! Mayor Bob Joslin joined students, teachers, administrators, mentors, and guests in the ultimate American Character challenge—keep the ball moving!
- Surrounded by mentors as they keep the ball moving!
- Now that’s a team! The challenge grew as students across the room joined together to keep the ball moving. The lesson? When everyone participates, communicates, and works together, there’s no telling what a team can accomplish!
- The challenge kept growing—and so did the team. Assistant Superintendent John Ingram joined students, teachers, and guests to help keep the ball moving!
- Leadership looks like showing up—and jumping in! Mayor Joslin & Mrs. Henry joined students in the American Character Beach Ball Challenge to help keep things moving.
- 3 beach balls= 3 times the work, 3 times the community support, and 3 times the fun!
- Everyone working together to not “drop the ball!”
- You can do more when you rely on your support team!
- Principal Brandon Smith stepped into the action to help students keep the challenge—and the ball—moving!
- When a community comes together, everyone has a role to play. And this is only the beginning.
- Because of people like Mayor Bob Joslin, students have the opportunity to experience American Character. Thank you for investing in the next generation of #GoodCharacters!
- Thank you to our friends Brittany Kilgo & Carla Adamw with Peoples Bank for their continued support of the next generation of #GoodCharacters!
