We stopped off at Caughman Road Elementary in Columbia, South Carolina today. Home of the Caughman Comets!

We set up our show in Caughman’s huge gymnasium, and Principal Jane Wyatt got everything started!

Ms. Wyatt told us a little about Caughman Road Elementary after the show. One interesting thing that they do at this school is a program called Positive Behavioral Intervention Support aka PBIS.  PBIS is a systemic approach to discipline that consists of school-wide expectations, consistency, consequences, and reward. Expectations are posted throughout the school and taught to students regularly.  The behavioral expectations are being Safe, On-task, Accountable, and Respectful (S.O.A.R.).  They even have currency that the students can earn and spend depending on their behavior!

Ms. Wyatt is a former history major and Social Studies teacher. She says that she feels it is very important that the students feel a connection with their heritage, and that history is taught in a way that makes it “come alive!” This is one of the main things that interested her in the Super Citizen Program.

Thank you to Ms. Wyatt for bringing the Next Great Americans Tour to Caughman Road Elementary!

Our last stop of the week will be tomorrow at Lester Elementary in Florence, South Carolina!
