On Friday, September 18, 650 fifth-graders from Decatur City Schools gathered together to kick of the Super Citizen Program at Austin High School’s Auditorium.

The students had heard about who would be visiting them that day, but couldn’t believe their eyes when Libby Liberty™ stepped off her pedestal and onto the stage. She had traveled all the way from New York Harbor to introduce them to the Super Citizen Program. Libby also told the students wonderful stories about her history and even the measurement of her nose!

The Liberty Learning Foundation is thrilled that Decatur City Schools will be implementing these crucial lessons about civics, social studies, character, financial literacy and career development into the classroom in a very unique way. The counselors at each elementary school will be facilitating the lessons during the students’ weekly counseling class. The other teachers in that grade level will support the counselors in this endeavor.

The Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce and the Quality Education Committee are the local heroes who sponsored this program in the Decatur elementary schools. In a few weeks, the students will graduate from the Super Citizen Program, take the Super Citizen Oath and honor individuals in their community who they believe to be “Super Citizens.”

As Libby Liberty™ pulled away in her bus, she was filled with hope and excitement for the students of Decatur as they embark on this wonderful journey to becoming “Super Citizens.”
