You could’ve heard a tear drop as Debbie Frazier, mother of fallen firefighter and 5-time Purple Heart recipient Jantzen Frasier, accepted an award on her son’s behalf. Though she, nor her son, is a stranger to awards, today’s ceremony was special – put on by fifth grade students as part of the Super Citizen Program. The 10-week program helps educators engage and teach children powerful lessons in civics, character, financial literacy, social studies and, as observed today, they are also learning that when they honor heroes, they “become heroes themselves.”

Today’s event was attended by press, parents, VIPs and local politicians who all watched as the children told why they had nominated each of the 13 community heroes today. “This project is part of the Super Citizen Program,” says Liberty Learning Education Specialist Cynthia Green. “It brings together everything they learned in the program and it shows how all those lessons apply to the real world. It brings the goodness out of the school walls and into the community.”

The program and the unforgettable events that bookend it were made possible by generous local sponsors, Regions Bank.

Thank you to everyone who participated and is helping teach, inspire & empower our Next Great Americans!
