In our first visit to a school in Alabama Power’s Southern Division, we were reminded that it takes this kind of proactive investment and good corporate citizenship to impact entire communities and the youth they nurture.

On Feb. 6, 2014, Liberty Learning Foundation’s Next Great Americans Bus Tour (fueled by a grant from Alabama Power Foundation) rolled into Camden, Ala., to kick off the Super Citizen Program for 5th graders at J.E. Hobbs Elementary.

More than 550 students (preK-5) joined in the exciting event as Lady Liberty brought the Statue of Liberty to life and introduced the Super Citizen Program students would begin when the bus rolled away. They’ll learn crucial lessons in civics, character, financial literacy, career exploration and our Great American Story!

This all-hands-on-deck approach to education begins with generous sponsorship, donation of teaching tools, teacher training … and ends in unforgettable events that engrain memories for a lifetime.

In fact, in the final portion of the Super Citizen Program, students bring their learning full-circle and out into the community as they nominate, carefully select and, ultimately, honor local heroes on stage in front of parents, press, peers and community VIPs.

At today’s kickoff, those VIPs showed up – and showed their dedication to the areas they serve: Alabama Power’s Rick McCreary and Floyd Harris, Wilcox County School Board Member Lester Turk, Dr. Andre’ P. Saulsberry from Wilcox County Superintendents Office, JE Hobbs principal, Roshanda Jackson and Asst. Principal Shelton Frye and City Councilman Julia Handly were all on hand and excited to begin this journey together.

The public is ivited to attend the kickoff celebration and watch as students receive graduation certificates, take the Super Citizen Pledge and honor local heroes from stage. Pleace check our calendar as dates / times are subject to change.
