Just as Kerry Williams, a representative from event sponsor Wells Fargo, asks the students “Did you enjoy the Super Citizen Program this year?”, more than a hundred fifth graders’ hands shoot up into the air. It’s pretty obvious to everyone in the lunchroom that these Super Citizens truly enjoyed taking part in the program. This is the second year that Lakewood Elementary has participated in the program and teachers we talked to say it gets better each and every year!
“I want to say thank you so much,” said 5th grade teacher Shayna Johnson. “The kids love the tshirts, all the flags and the hats they got to wear. It was very nice of them (Wells Fargo). I hope that they do it next year and that I hope I can be a part of it.”
During Lakewood’s Super Citizen Graduation, the fifth graders received graduation certificates, recited the Super Citizen Pledge, and celebrated their completion of the program. The fifth graders also honored three Torch Team Heros during the ceremony by presenting them with an Authentic Liberty Replica on stage.
“I felt honored, it was pretty awesome for them to write about me and vote for me as the Super Citizen. It’s awesome to be their hero,” said Torch Team Hero Chris Archer.
Archer served as a Mortarman in the United States Army Infantry. He spent a year in Afghanistan and visited the orphanages in town to deliver school supplies. Archer wants the Super Citizen Program to continue at Lakewood saying, “I hope they continue to learn about it and grow and become Super Citizens themselves.”
Another hero recognized was 5th grade Teacher Shayna Johnson. Johnson says she was honored so many classmates nominated her, “I want to keep doing what they say that I do- I want to keep being nice, fair, and making sure that they learned something everyday.”
After the celebration, Johnson and the other fifth grade teachers treated their Super Citizen students to a large sheet cake that read “Congratulations Super Citizens”. They hope their students remember what they’ve learned and implement it into their everyday lives.
