Whenever we receive reports about teachers getting creative with interactive lessons in the Super Citizen Program, we post them. They always make us proud. This one also makes us HUNGRY!

Here’s what happened when creative 2nd grade teacher, Mallory Rhodes, decided learning the meanings behind the colors in the American Flag should be fun … and delicious.

Class Assignment:

  • Teacher bought 4 packs of the regular sized sugar cookies divided them into 5 equal parts and baked as package told them to. The cookies are large!
  • She asked parents to volunteer to bring in ingredients to make the American Flags.
  • Students brought in cool whip, blueberries, and strawberries and made American Flags.
  • Teacher cut the fruit in smaller pieces for the students to use.
  • Students created the flag by first spreading the cool whip, then placing the blueberries in the top left for the stars (keeping white shinning through) and then added red stripes with the strawberries.

Rhodes says, “We incorporated what each color stands for, what a pledge is, and what each symbol the flag stands for. The students really enjoyed culminating it together and then getting to enjoy their editable snack!”
