About 100 Mill Creek Elementary 5th graders, finished this year’s Super Citizen Program with an energetic graduation celebration, and by honoring local heroes on stage.

“In addition to the 10-week civic, character, financial literacy and social studies lessons they learned in the program,” says Liberty Learning Foundation (LLF) educational specialist Joyce Bishop, “they participated in ‘Torch Teams’ which brings their learning full-circle and back out into the community.”

The Super Citizen Program, a huge kickoff event and today’s graduation were all made possible by the Madison Co. Commission, Jane K. Lowe Foundation and Belk Huntsville. Those groups generously donated funding to allow LLF to bring its powerful bus tour, stage performances and curriculum infusion tools to Madison City Schools this year.

“We measure outcomes from testing,” says LLF founder Patti Yancey, “but today, when they honor heroes for exemplifying the characteristics they have learned about, it’s really the only proof you need.”

Today, student Torch Teams recognized Madison Police Officer Niles, James Clemons High School senior Allen King, Special needs / Girl Scout leader Rhonda Gilmore and school custodian Derek Sancho for their service to the community.

Most importantly, our Super Citizens learned that “when you honor a hero, you become a hero!”

Liberty Learning Foundation & Mill Creek Elementary (along with all of our other Madison City Schools) would like to say a huge thank you again to the sponsors who made this crucial program possible in the 2014-2015 school year.

In fact, one of today’s heroes echoed the same sentiment to our generous supporters “I want to thank them very much,” says Torch Team Hero / custodian Sancho. “They don’t understand how much these kids needed this and appreciate it.”
