On Oct. 23, 2014, 450 elementary students packed the U.S. Jones Gymnasium in Demopolis, AL waiting for the Next Great Americans Tour Bus to arrive. After a countdown, clapping, cheering and burst of loud patriotic music, a head-to-toe green Lady Liberty took the stage. She brought history to life and introduced the 175 fifth graders in attendance to the exciting Super Citizen Program they will take part in over the next 10 weeks.
Representatives from today’s sponsor, Alabama Power, were on hand to show support for the school, the community and the program that’s teaching our Next Great Americans crucial lessons in civics, character, financial literacy, careers and social studies – despite funding cuts and the shrinking sliver of time spent on these important lessons in the classroom.
